Established in 2023 and registered as a non-profit organization, we represent the collective users of Mohawk Sports Park. Working together to improve the parks services and facilities.
Before our organization was officially incorporated in 2023, our members worked collectively toward areas of improvement at Mohawk Sports Park, totaling over $4 million dollars of investment. This included infrastructure and accessibility improvements, purchasing new community program equipment, hosting professional development, training and certification clinics for volunteers, and delivery of new or expanded programs and services as directed by our member organizations and the needs of our community.
All of these achievements were made possible through collaborative efforts, which led to our formal incorporation as a non-profit organization in 2023 with a program and service focus on areas involving Health & Wellness, Equity, and Conservation.
Our program and service delivery are directed by three strategic pillars: Health & Wellness, Equity, and Conservation. Priority activities take into consideration the direction we receive from our member organizations and are driven by community needs, recognizing that certain populations remain underserved.
Typical activities involve proactive efforts to create a safer, more inclusive and accessible public space, which can be best achieved through community engagement and collaborative strategies. These areas have typically included infrastructure and accessibility improvements, purchasing new community program equipment, hosting professional development, training and certification clinics for volunteers, and delivery of new or expanded programs and services that typically reflect the changing needs of our community.
To advance park, recreation and environmental conservation efforts that enhance the sustainability and the quality of life for all people who access Mohawk Sports Park and aligns with the Canada’s 2030 National Strategy Agenda for Sustainable Development.
We seek a future where the full power of the MSP Sports Council is widely recognized for creating a better life for everyone by building strong, healthy and resilient communities by serving as a catalyst for positive change which is founded on the three pillars of Health & Wellness, Equity and Conservation.
MSP Sports Council commits to championing and evaluating local solutions, building strategic partnerships, developing resources and implementing best practices involving policy change, supporting professional development opportunities and supporting impactful initiatives which facilitate transformative community Health & Wellness Initiatives.
We will strive to ensure that all people have access to these spaces, programs and services that remain essential to community vitality and serve as a key factor in advancing health equity, improving individual and community-level health outcomes, and enhancing the overall quality of life of residents within our community.
MSP Sports Council adheres to the guiding principles of Inclusion-Diversity-Equity-Accessibility (IDEA) in recognition that many communities of color and other marginalized groups, such as LGBTQ+, immigrants, people with low income and people with disabilities, lack the opportunity to experience and engage in high-quality park and recreation opportunities involving systemic barriers related to safe, welcoming and inclusive public space. As such, we have made a formal commitment towards collaborative partnership opportunities involving a system-wide park master plan which will be utilized as a tool that can help us understand the history and current barriers to park access and set a vision and plan to remove these inequities and ensure park and open space are providing the most benefit to communities.
MSP Sports Council strives to create a public park space that is not only resilient and regenerative, but also transformative at the community level and incorporates climate change solutions which will contribute to a more inviting and sustainable public outdoor space. As stewards of this vital public space, the MSP Sports Council will engage our community through environmental programming initiatives in support of creating a healthy ecosystem and advocate for the benefits of nature through sustainable best practices.
